Sol41 Nails Studio

Renovation, Research and Design

Sol = Sun

Sol41 Nails Studio in Kallithea was renovated and remodeled by the KS Project design team to accentuate the colorful brand concept of the business owner. The challenge of the shop’s small space was overcome by combining materials, color contrasts and floor levels to maintain unity while delineating its different functions.

And so, in the place of a former mini-market, we created a nail care and beauty salon, resembling a youthful home salon and radiating relaxation and light, inspired by the name “Sol” itself, which means “sun”.

The peculiarity – as well as the challenge – that this project presented was the small and narrow floor plan of the store, as well as the fact that creating such a professional space to cover a large variety of functions necessitated careful differentiation of interior areas.

The team’s primary goal in designing the building was to create a bright, cheerful, welcoming and appealing space for both employees and customers. Given the nature of a beauty and grooming salon, it was equally important that the aesthetic result reflected the personality and style of the business owner-manager. On a practical level, the aim was to evoke a sense of spaciousness to ensure comfort for customers who visit the salon and spend a lot of time or even hours there, depending on the services they choose.

The overall aesthetic of the space was designed to align with the branding and emphasize the name of the business as much as possible: the lounge is called “SOL”, meaning sun, so the bright mood and approach was our main concern and goal.

The team’s design idea was to use a palette of bright, pale colors, predominantly white, which exudes cleanliness, without using large, strictly defined colored surfaces. Thus, the walls, counters and equipment were kept white, while mosaic tile with both small and large pattern adorned the floor. As a result, the borders of the space “disappeared”, creating the illusion of a single surface where colors and textures float, giving a light feeling while also enlarging the space. To make the area even brighter, the pale color of the mosaic was used on the front of the living room to create a strong contrast with the predominantly white interior.

We made sure that access to the loft was as discreet as possible, both spatially and in terms of color. To achieve this, the staircase was made metal and round. In addition, the loft was painted all-white to disappear from the main area of the shop, as it is exposed and the visitor could easily spot it upon entering the building.

This decision also influenced the differentiation of the shop’s functionality: various materials and color contrasts were combined and, most importantly, three different types of flooring were employed, while we made sure that there were level changes per floor. Thus, the space was kept unified, while clearly defining its different functions.

The furniture and equipment’s geometry avoids sharp edges, in order for the space to appear even more “fluid” and playful. The decorative elements chosen are simple, giving the space a minimalist touch. These features, combined with the use of warm wooden features and added plants, transform the space into a youthful home lounge, radiating calm, tranquility and relaxation, escaping the strict lines of a professional service area.
