Padel court design in Piraeus

Research, design and construction

Padel courts

The Athens-based architectural practice KS Project has been commissioned to design four Padel courts in the area of Mikrolimanos in Piraeus, in facilities that will house a gym, a café and relaxation and leisure areas.

During the design of the facilities, emphasis was placed on the intermediate area of the courts, with the aim of turning it into an ideal gathering, recreation and wellness spot for visitors. The main structural and aesthetic feature of the space is a metal structure that creates two levels of movement, a ground floor and an overground.

The above-ground path, in conjunction with the path it delineates at ground level, creates the feeling that it “flows” around the pitches, making use of its “negative” space. Consequently, it unifies the whole complex as a connecting link, while also marking the movement paths and highlighting the stopping, recreational and socialization points.

On the ground floor level, the shells of the courts are painted with colorful geometric patterns, contributing both to the formation of a special aesthetic in the space and a sense of well-being for its users.

On the same level outside the Padel courts, the main staging area is created, marked by a large tree, the area with hammocks and tropical plants, as well as the gym. Here, the metal structure – in addition to providing shade and protection from the elements – allows a cluster of additional sports equipment to be installed, including high-bars, ring supports, climbing walls, etc.

A staircase through the gym area leads upstairs to the café-bar. From there, the metal structure unfolds, creating a bridge from which visitors can enjoy the view of the wider area and watch the matches hosted on the Padel courts. This bridge is interrupted by the tree and hammock area above, highlighting them and creating voids that contribute to the visual and aesthetic connection between the two levels. As a result, paths of movement are developed on the floor level around the three focal stopping points: the café-bar with its terrace, the tree space and the hammock space.

The whole design that the KS Project team pursued for the Padel facilities suggests movement and flow, as the metal structures flow in the space, challenging and inviting the athlete to move. The choice of the color yellow, which symbolizes energy and optimism, is integrated into the overall design and atmosphere of the space with absolute consistency and harmony, giving the facility a distinct identity with a sporty yet fun attitude.
