Renovation of a rental residence in Mykonos

Research, design and renovation

Rental residence

For the architectural firm The KS Project, the study, renovation, and complete configuration of a rental residence in the heart of Mykonos was an extremely interesting and creative challenge.

It is a single-story house with a loft, for the completion of which our design team worked closely with the owners, so that the result corresponds to their aesthetics and their personal vision.

From the beginning, therefore, two very important common goals were set by both sides: First, to shape a place that will ensure privacy but also the feeling of absolute calm and relaxation for its users. A particularly difficult challenge, given that the residence is located in Chora, i.e., in the most “lively” and crowded part of the island. Second, to design a welcoming rental residence that will create a sense of quiet luxury for travelers, without altering the traditional morphology of its individual elements.

In order to achieve the above in the best possible way, The KS Project team decided to maintain the traditional way of structuring the residence, consisting of a single living area with a kitchen and living room, and a slightly separated sleeping area. Following a minimal design approach with references to the traditional, the minimum possible materials were used: plaster/cement mortar and wood. In the areas of the living room, the kitchen, and also at the base of the bed, the built elements played a dominant role, while cement mortar was the main material for both the ground floor floor and the masonry. In this way, the visual unification of the interior surfaces of the residence was achieved, giving an aesthetic coherence that exudes calmness and relaxation.

References to the authentic Mykonian architecture were made sure to be pervasive throughout, thanks to the extensive use of cement mortar and the choice of building elements and details, but also the use of wood in the ceilings and loft. The kitchen was designed with a corresponding philosophy: in order to lighten the space at eye level, the cabinets are absent from the upper cabinets, while a built structure with wooden cabinets was created for under the counter. In the frames, notes of color were chosen that contrast with the rest of the ensemble, which is dominated by earthy colors, closer to gray.

At the same time, it was decided to avoid central dominant lighting, in order to configure individual lighting installations that create a sense of intimacy and warmth, with built-in lighting and carefully selected wall and corner hanging lamps. The interior of the residence is thus subtly divided into a living room, dining room, kitchen, etc., without losing its coherent, unified character.
